Dear Colleagues:
UCLA is committed to maintaining a robust Human Research Protection Program that supports high-quality, efficient review and oversight of research involving human participants. To support the resources and infrastructure required for this work, the UCLA Office of the Human Research Protection Program (OHRPP) will update its IRB review fees for qualifying industry-sponsored clinical trials effective
NOVEMBER 1, 2026.
Updated Fees
Effective
NOVEMBER 1, 2026, the following one-time fees will apply:
•
UCLA IRB review: $3,800, increased from $3,200
•
Reliance review: $3,200, increased from $2,000, when UCLA relies on an external IRB as the reviewing IRB
These fees have not been updated since 2023. The revised rates better reflect the resources required to support the review and oversight of industry-sponsored clinical research, including the significant institutional responsibilities that remain with UCLA when an external IRB serves as the reviewing IRB.
The fees will continue to be assessed as one-time charges. OHRPP does not assess additional review fees for amendments, continuing reviews, or post-approval reports.
Studies Subject to the Fees
The updated fees do
not expand the types of research currently subject to IRB review fees. They will continue to apply only to qualifying industry-sponsored clinical trials that meet UCLA's existing criteria.
There will continue to be
NO IRB review fee for:
•
Exempt research
•
Amendments, continuing reviews, or PARs
•
Unfunded research
•
Research supported by NIH or other government agencies
•
Investigator-initiated studies,
including investigator-initiated studies that receive industry funding
•
Industry-sponsored studies that do not meet UCLA's definition of a clinical trial
Implementation
The updated rates will apply to qualifying studies created in BruinIRB on or after
NOVEMBER 1, 2026. Studies with applications created before the effective date will remain subject to the current fee schedule.
Additional information, including updated guidance and frequently asked questions, will be available on the
OHRPP website prior to the effective date.
Questions regarding the updated fee structure or its applicability to a specific study may be directed to Kristin Rochford, Senior Director, OHRPP at
Kristin.Rochford@research.ucla.edu.
For questions about budgeting or negotiating the fee with industry sponsors, please contact Tamika Merrick, Director, Clinical Trials Contracts and Strategic Relations at
TMerrick@mednet.ucla.edu.
Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting UCLA's research mission.
Sincerely,
Roger M. Wakimoto
